The festival kicks off Friday, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. on Jubilee Theatre's main stage. The theatre's playwright-in-residence for the 2011-2012 season, Celeste Bedford Walker, has selected five new plays for recognition. Walker will announce the top script at this event, followed by a spotlight reading of the work. The spotlight reading is open to the public on a pay-as-you-can basis, with a suggested minimum cash contribution of $5.
Over the course of the year, more than seventy new works by 67 individual playwrights were submitted for consideration. The pieces represent work from twenty-two different states and include fourteen plays by DFW-based writers.
The top five plays selected are: Mama's Baby by Tommy Bryant (Bristol, TN); Sweep N Slide by R. Lee Spivey (Fort Worth, TX); Willie and Sam by Joe Dimiceli (Landsdale, PA); Sisters by Bradley Candie (Atlanta, GA); and My Father's House by Derrick Grant (Frisco, TX).
The New Works Festival concludes on Sunday, June 17 with a playwriting master class led by Ms. Walker. This event will be in the Tandy Lecture Hall at the Fort Worth Public Library, 500 West 3rd Street, from 1:15 to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $20 and advance online registration is required.
The master class will cover the business of professional playwriting, from concept to page and from page to stage. Area playwrights or still aspiring, are encouraged to attend.
