Our Beginnings

Founded by Rudy and Marian Eastman in Fort Worth, Texas on June 19, 1981, Jubilee Theatre is the original home of African-American theater in North Texas. Jubilee Theatre was incorporated in 1982 and received its 501(c)(3) status in May 1983.

Early Years

In the beginning, Jubilee operated without a permanent home, performing in local theaters, nightclubs, and venues like the Caravan of Dreams and Stage West. Then in 1987 Jubilee opened its first theater at 3114 East Rosedale, across from Texas Wesleyan University, funded through an Amon G. Carter Foundation Challenge Grant.

Establishing Downtown Roots

In November of 1993, an active Board of Trustees successfully concluded a capital campaign resulting in a newly renovated theater in downtown Fort Worth’s Sundance Square at 506 Main Street, the place we all known and love today.

Expanding Horizons

With support from Hardy and Betty Sanders, Jubilee enhances its capacity for original musicals like Travelin' Shoes and Attitude Girlfriend, Attitude. And from 2004-2005 with community support, Jubilee completes a $460,000 renovation, expanding seating, stage, and amenities to enhance the audience experience.

A New Era of Growth

Under Interim Artistic Director Benard Cummings, productions like A Motown Christmas drew record attendance, and the 2018-2019 season set a new standard with five regional premieres. And in 2018, D. Wambui Richardson joins as Artistic Director, bringing over 20 years of experience and a commitment to Jubilee’s mission and growth.
